Understanding Data and Model Lineage

What lineage is

The story: A good coffee shop can tell you where its beans were grown, how they were roasted, and how they were ground. If a batch tastes off, they can trace it back to the exact farm and roasting day.

In AI/AWS terms: Data and model lineage is the record of where data and models came from and how they were transformed and evolved. It shows their reliability, biases, and limits.

For the exam: Lineage records where data and models came from and how they changed.

Source citation and documenting data origins

The story: The coffee bag's label says how the beans were picked, how they were sorted and cleaned, and how they were roasted. That label is why customers trust it, why problems can be traced, and who gets the blame if something's wrong.

In AI/AWS terms: These support transparency, traceability, and accountability. Documenting origins means recording:

  • How the data was collected
  • How it was curated and cleaned
  • What preprocessing or transformations were applied

For the exam: Source citation and documenting origins support transparency, traceability, and accountability.

Tools and techniques

The story: The coffee shop keeps a journey log for each batch, an inventory book of every batch in stock, and a spec sheet for each blend: what it's for, how it tastes, where the beans came from, and who shouldn't drink it.

In AI/AWS terms:

  • Data lineage: tracking data through each transformation (the journey log)
  • Cataloging: an inventory of datasets and their metadata (the inventory book)
  • Model cards: standardized documentation of a model's intended use, performance, and limits, including datasets, sources, licenses, and known biases (the spec sheet)

Amazon SageMaker Model Cards record intended use, risk rating, training details and metrics, evaluation results, and recommendations. They guide correct use, support audits, and show how a model serves business goals.

For the exam: SageMaker Model Cards document a model's intended use, risk rating, training details, and evaluation results.
